Sire De Grugy Puts Up Championship Performance

The absence of reigning champion Sprinter Sacre produced a Betvictor Queen Mother Champion Chase field which, while looking one of the most open renewals for several years, on paper lacked the quality we have become accustomed to due to the exploits of horses like Moscow Flyer, Master Minded and Sprinter Sacre in recent memory but nobody mentioned that particular assertion to 11-4 favourite Sire De Grugy who produced a performance worthy of any of the aforementioned, putting his ten rivals to the sword with the minimum of fuss.

Content to sit in mid division while Special Tiara, Arvika Ligeonniere and Somersby cut out the running with previous winner Sizing Europe breathing down their necks the race began in earnest at the forth-last where the strong-travelling Baily Green came down, badly hampering Hinterland in the process causing Noel Fehily to be unseated from the Paul Nicholls-trained second season novice.

Dominic Elsworth led briefly going to the penultimate fence aboard Somersby but the writing was on the wall as Jamie Moore came to mount his challenge and taking up the running approaching the last quickly put the issue beyond doubt strolling up the famous Cheltenham hill to the roars of the crowd beating old-timer Somersby who just held the late challenge of Module for the runner-up spot.

Hopefully, the deposed champion will be back next year fit and well, but the current champion is unlikely to relinquish his throne without a fight. Bring it on!
