Last Instalment Gold Cup Bid In Balance

With the ground at Prestbury Park appearing to be drying out by the minute the possibility of clerk of the course Simon Claisse watering the new course on Thursday and Friday could prove crucial to connections of leading Irish Betfred Gold Cup challenger Last Instalment who could well miss the championship contest if conditions are considered unsuitable for the fragile winner of the Irish Hennessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown last month.

A late call is expected as to whether the 9-year-old Anshan gelding will be allowed to take his chance against the likes of Bobs Worth and Silviniaco Conti although the horse is in the process of travelling to England, of which trainer Philip Fenton said: " He's heading over this afternoon and a decision will be made over there later in the week.

" We'll see how the ground is riding and we'll have the course walked a couple of times. We'll be making a decision as late as possible. We'll hope there might be a bit of frost to keep a bit of moisture in the ground. The horse is in good shape, so we'll see what happens."

A best price 8-1 with the sponsor and Last Instalment is one of three possible Festival runners for Fenton, the other two being Champion Bumper contender Value At Risk ( top price 14-1 with Ladbrokes ) and Dunguib, winner of that race in 2009 and now as an 11-year-old on course to run in Wednesday's Coral Cup for which the gelding is set to carry top weight and is a best price 12-1 with William Hill.

Fenton expects a big run from the son of Presenting, saying: " He's on-song and on target. He's rated 154 over there ( England ) and he's 3lb higher at home, so we'll see what happens. This is the right race for him and this is probably his last chance of running in Cheltenham, being an 11-year-old. He's in good shape and we're hoping for the best."
