Kauto Star will run in the Cheltenham Gold Cup after completing his final workout which was described as ‘awesome’ by his trainer Paul Nicholls on Monday morning.

Ruby Walsh jumped six fences aboard Kauto Star at Ditchleat in the morning and at mid-day Nicholls reported on his stable star: "He was awesome, just as I'd thought he would be."

Walsh, in the meantime was telling his twitter followers, "Kauto jumped brilliant, the dream is alive again".

Nicholl’s 12-year-old is the most popular staying chaser of recent years and will be making his final appearance at the Cheltenham Festival on Friday when he will bid for his third Gold Cup title.

Doubts were raised about Kauto Star’s participation at Cheltenham when he took a fall in training just over two weeks ago. But Clive Smith’s gelding recovered quickly from the bruising sustained in the tumble and finished fit and well in a racecourse work out at Wincanton on Saturday. This morning’s schooling session was his final piece of work and Kauto Star will go to Cheltenham where he will renew rivalry with last year’s Gold Cup winner, Long Run.

Seven-year-old Long Run is 2/1 with Paddy Power to retain his chasing crown, but following this morning’s developments, Kauto Star has been trimmed to 7/2 with most bookmakers, although Boylesports and Sportingbet were holding on at 4/1 by mid-Monday afternoon.

Kauto Star will be making his sixth appearance in the Cheltenham Gold Cup and should he win, he will join Best Mate and Arkle as the only horses in the last 50 years to win the Gold Cup three times.
