Cheltenham Gold Cup star Long Run is odds on favourite for the Betfair Denman Chase which will be held at Newbury on Friday.

Nicky Henderson’s chaser heads the market and could face seven rivals for the rearranged Grade 2 event which has been salvaged from the meeting which was abandoned on Saturday.

It gives Long Run the chance of a final race before heading to the Cheltenham Festival to defend his Gold Cup crown. The seven-year-old is 1/2 with bet365 to beat seven other entries, Paddy Power bet 11/2 second favourite What A Friend and 10/1 for Tidal Bay who will be representing champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

Alan King sends Medermit who is also 10/1 with the Irish firm on his first attempt at three miles and Long Run’s stable mate Burton Pont is 12/1 making his first racecourse appearance since November 2010. David Bridgewater’s recent Cheltenham winner, The Giant Bolster is among the entries and rated 14/1 by Paddy Power. Little Josh, 25/1 at Paddy Power and Chapel House, 150/1 at BetVictor complete the line up.

Long Run has remained ante post favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup despite being beaten by Kauto Star in two previous outings this season in the Betfair Chase at Haydock in November and the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day. Henderson will be looking for a more fluent jumping display as his champion chaser bids to get off the mark with his first win of the season on Friday.
