Gold Cup remains target for Diamond Harry

Owner Paul Duffy says Diamond Harry has recovered well from a minor operation and is on target for a crack at the Betfred Gold Cup at the Cheltenham Festival next month.

The nine-year-old finished fifth in the Argento Chase at Cheltenham a fortnight ago when jockey Noel Fehily reported the horse had trouble with his breathing. Williams decided to deal with the problem quickly and Diamond Harry was booked in for a surgical procedure to improve his wind.

"The operation went OK and he's recovered well. It was just a minor wind op on his soft palette," said Duffy.

“He's back doing a bit of walking. I know he's had his preparation interrupted but he wouldn't have been doing that much at that stage. Obviously we won't know for sure if it's worked but we're going to have a go at the Gold Cup."

Nick Williams charge competed in the Gold Cup in his first season over larger obstacles after winning two novices’ chases in 2010. Timmy Murphy pulled him up after a series of fiddling mistakes in the race won by Weapon’s Amnesty at the 2010 Cheltenham Festival.

Diamond Harry missed the following year's festival and returned to racing after a year on the sidelines to finish fourth behind Kauto Star at Haydock last November. He went off joint favourite in his next race, the Argento at Cheltenham’s Festival Trial meeting, but made little impression when finishing behind the winner, Midnight Chase.

Connections are hoping his breathing will improve for the operation and he can put up a better display in this year’s Gold Cup. Diamond Harry is not among the leading fancies for the Cheltenham showpiece and can be backed at 40/1 with BetVictor and Ladbrokes.
