Pipe undecided on Grands Crus Cheltenham Festival target

Punters must wait a while longer to learn which race David Pipe decides to run Grands Crus at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

The talented seven-year-old holds an entry in the Betfred Gold Cup and is ante post for the RSA Chase for staying novices. Pipe is yet to give an indication of which of the two Cheltenham races he’d prefer for the grey. When asked by Racing UK what it would take to make up his mind, he replied: “The opposition”.

"Anything can happen to any horse unfortunately and, as we've seen in Cheltenham Festivals, some do fall by the wayside, so we have to keep our options open.”

In the meantime, Pipe will keep tabs on the progress of the chief Gold Cup contenders Long Run and Kauto Star while continuing preparations for Grands Crus who is being lined up for one more race before heading to the Cheltenham Festival.

"We're looking at running him next in the Argento at the end of the month or a novice chase in February and we'll probably decide next week. He's in good form and all has gone well since Kempton,” added the Pond House handler.

Grands Crus has won all three of his races since switching to the larger obstacles this season. He last appeared on Kempton’s Boxing Day card when winning the Grade 1 Feltham Novices’ Chase and was established clear favourite for the RSA Chase, as short as 2/1 in places.

Grands Crus is rated third favourite, behind Long Run and Kauto in the Cheltenham Gold Cup ante post market. Non runners are treated as losers for ante post bets, however Betfred and Ladrokes are offering non-runner, no-bet for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and will refund ante-post stakes placed on Grands Crus after the date of the offer should he miss the Cheltenham showpiece.
