Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Long Run will have an easy week as trainer Nicky Henderson times his preparation for the King George at Kempton on Boxing Day.

Henderson remains unconcerned about Long Run’s eight-length defeat against former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Kauto Star at Haydock and won’t be asking his stable star for anything strenuous until next week.

"He's very good and seems very happy in himself," said Henderson when hosting a press morning at is Lambourn stable. He did two canters this morning and he won't do any more serious work until next week.

"As long as the King George is on the 26th [the race was postponed last year], then hopefully we'll get the timings right."

Long Run is 13/8 favourite at William Hill to succeed in defending his King George crown and Henderson reminded the gathered hacks of last season’s form when the six-year-old finished third in the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham before twice demolishing Kauto Star in the King George and Gold Cup.

"He didn't blow for unnecessarily long afterwards and you look back at his run in the Paddy Power and say 'was that any better?'. This was probably better,” insisted the trainer.

Long Run remains clear favourite to retaining his Gold Cup crown at the 2012 Cheltenham Festival next March, best priced at 11/4 with Sporting Bet and Coral.
