More than 2000 punters will get a Cheltenham free bet if Donald McCain-trained Overturn runs in the Champion Hurdle following his success at Newcastle on Saturday.

Earlier in the week, race sponsor StanJames.com told punters if they backed the winner of the Fighting Fifth Hurdle the firm would give them a free bet of the same stake on the same horse in the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival in March.

Overturn beat 2010 Champion Hurdle winner Binocular by 4-and-a-half lengths in the Fighting Fifth and Stan James announced afterwards that they faced a massive six-figure liability on the seven-year-old hurdler if he takes his chance on the opening day of the 2012 Cheltenham Festival.

Stan James cut the price of Overturn to win the Champion Hurdle to 14/1 from 25/1 and spokesman Garry McGibbon said: “Over 2,000 happy Stan James customers are now in line for a first-day Cheltenham Festival freebie if Overturn heads for the Stan James Champion Hurdle. On the downside for us, we're staring at a significant six-figure liability if Overturn manages to win the Champion Hurdle."

Overturn was creating history by becoming the first horse to win both Newcastle’s top flat and hurdle races, the Northumberland Plate and Fighting Fifth Hurdle, an achievement the great Sea Pigeon was unable to pull off as he only managed second in the Plate. Victory means McCain’s tough hurdler is likely to have another crack at the Champion Hurdle after finishing seventh behind Hurricane Fly at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival.

The trainer said: “He won’t be running for a while and we’ve got to decide what we do. I’d have thought we’d go back for the Champion Hurdle as he does seem to have improved again this time”.
