The Paul Nicholls trained Mon Parrain is ante-post favourite for the Paddy Power Gold Cup at Cheltenham on November 12th and the progressive five year old who worked at Exeter racecourse after racing yesterday has been given 10st 8lb in the big race of the Cheltenham Open weekend .

The Paddy Power Gold Cup has prize money of £150 000 this year and has attracted 49 entries of which six are trained by champion trainer Paul Nicholls.

Poquelin is one of those Nicholls entries and tops the weights for the second consecutive year after finishing fifth in the race last year prior to posting a pair of victories at Cheltenham in the Grade Three December Gold Cup and the Grade Two Masterson Holdings Trophy Chase. Poquelin is quoted at 25/1 with Paddy Power as he bids to become the first horse to carry top-weight to victory in the two and a half-mile contest since Cyfor Malta triumphed for a second time in 2002.

Wishful Thinking is the 15/2 second favourite and the Philip Hobbs trained runner clearly has a liking for the course after finishing second in the Grade 2 Jewson Novices Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March this year .

Also well fancied for the Paddy Power Gold Cup is Holmwood Legend who enjoyed a storming victory in the Grade Three Byrne Group Plate over two miles and five furlongs at The Cheltenham Festival in March before running another excellent race when beaten over the same course and distance by only half a length to Poquelin in the Masterson Holdings Trophy Chase, one month later ,despite racing from 10lb out of the handicap that day .

Former jockey , now trainer Kieran Burke commented "I know that I have a very tough task to keep improving him after such a rise in the weights but he loves Cheltenham and I am looking forward to seeing him back in action.”

Paddy Power are offering odds of 20/1 for Holmwood Legend to win the Gold Cup but the Irish bookie has seen most interest so far in The Giant Bolster , and the David Bridgewater trained six year old is now 12/1 from an initial quote of 20's .

The Paddy Power Gold Cup for four year olds and upwards is ran over two and a half miles and takes place at 2.35pm on Saturday 12th November .
