Cheltenham Gold Cup Betting Tips: Gamble develops on Kempes and Midnight Run

The early money has been coming in for Nicky Henderson’s young star Long Run but there is a gamble developing on two Gold Cup dark horses.

Irish trainer Willie Mullins saddles Kempes for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and has 15-time champion jockey AP McCoy aboard his eight-year-old gelding. Kempes rose to prominence when winning the Irish Henessy Gold Cup at Leopardstown last month and bookmakers have been inundated with bets on the day of the race.

A solid 10/1 chance when offices opened on Thursday and despite support for Long Run and the favourite Imperial Commander, the odds for Kempes have been slowly collapsing throughout the morning. Boylesports, a reputable strong layer, has cut his odds from 10/1 to 7/1 under the sheer weight of interest and Totesport has also cut its early price of 10/1 and now bet 17/2. Bet365 is holding out at 9/1 but this is unlikely last much longer as the horse continues to shorten with all the major bookmakers.

Neil Mulholland saddles Midnight Chase who is making a jump in class from handicapping company. This is not putting off punters who are happily backing the progressive front runner to odds as short as 10/1. Midnight Chase opened around 16/1 and the eight-year-old’s odds have plummeted through the morning. Stan James has taken a battering at 16/1 and now offers 12/1 which is closely in line with the betting exchanges.
