Festival Handicap Result: Bensalem makes amends for last year's slip

Tagged under: 2.40 JLT Speciality Steeple Chase (Handicap) 3m 1/2f

Trainer Alan King was able to forget the disappointment of last year’s Festival Handicap when Bensalem prevailed in a neck and neck finish with Carole’s Legacy in this year’s Stewart Family Spinal Research Handicap Chase.

In last year’s race Bensalem looked to be cruising to certain victory when falling two fences from home, but managed to set the record straight in a thrilling finish in his year’s renewal. Robert Thornton collected his mount after getting close to the final fence and battled to a driving finish where he won by half-a-length from Nicky Henderson’s game mare - it was a third consecutive second for the Henderson/Geraghty team.

Reve De Silva, ridden by Daryle Jacob, was in contention up to the last flight but was outstayed and finished a further 11 lengths away in third place with Rhys Flint on Fair Along never dangerous taking fourth spot.

Timmy Murphy fell at the last when leading on Great Endevour, although he looked to have been caught by the fist three finishers as they took the last almost inline.
