Arkle Trophy Result: Captain Chris prevails for Hobbs

Tagged under: 2.05 Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase 2m

Captain Chris produced a fine effort to win the Arkle Trophy at odds of 6/1 under the guidance of jockey Richard Johnson to dash the hopes of another strongly fancied favourite on the opening day of the Cheltenham Festival.

The Philip Hobbs trained son of Kings Theatre finished strongest in a tight battle to the line with Finian’s Rainbow with Irish challenger Realt Dubh back in third place. Captain Chris was reversing form with favourite Medermit who was seen as a Cheltenham banker by many pundits and had beaten the winner by half-a-length at Sandown in early February.

Trainer Nicky Henderson and jockey Barry Geraghty were once again having to settle for runners up spot with Finian’s Rainbow after finishing a narrow second in the opener when Spirit Son finished behind Al Ferof.
