Champion Hurdle sponsors Stan James have their fingers crossed that Peddlers Cross does not win the feature race on Tuesday.

Having refunded stakes on ante post favourite Binocular, Donald McCain’s unbeaten hurdler is by far the worst result for the sponsors in this year’s Stan James Champion Hurdle.

Spokesman Garry McGibbon said: "Peddlers Cross is the result we fear the most. We took a strong view on the horse after he won at Kelso last time when we pushed his price out, so if he does win the Stan James Champion Hurdle we'll well and truly pay for it.

"The worst case scenario for us would be Peddlers Cross first, with the Irish duo Dunguib and Hurricane Fly filling the places."

The six-year-old son of Oscar has been preparing at home since winning at Kelso last month when maintaining his 100% racecourse record with a win over Bygones of Brid. McCain’s star had suffered an interrupted preparation over the Christmas period which included a bout of coughing during the cold spell and the trainer was relieved to see his charge come through his racecourse return unscathed.

Peddlers Cross is a 4/1 chance to win the two-mile hurdle championship and will face 10 other runners led by 10/3 favourite Menorah trained by Philip Hobbs.
