20 Horses have been declared for the first running of the Jewson Novices' Chase, which opens Thursday's Festival card, and the field is headed by two runners fron the Philip Hobbs stable.

Wishfull Thinking heads the betting on 9/2 after thrashing a field of experienced handicappers in Cheltenham's Murphy Group Handicap Chase, giving 5lb and a beating to the decent Calgary Bay.

The son of Alflora also held an entry in the longer RSA Chase, but connections have decided to take in, what looks on paper, the easier option.

The same may turn out to be the case with stablemate Captain Chris, a top price 6/1 with William Hill, who has also been declared for Tuesday's Irish Independent Arkle Chase, but connections have stated that the gelding is unlikely to take part in the two-mile contest.

The Irish are responsible for more than a third of the entries, with seven potential runners, headed by the Montjeu ( yet to sire a winner at the Festival ) gelding Noble Prince.

The Paul Nolan trained 7 year-old has taken well to the bigger obstacles, and was beaten only a short head by Arkle fancy Realt Dubh in Leopardstown's Grade 1 Frank Ward Solicitors Arkle Novice Chase, and is currently a standout 13/2 with Stan James for the Jewson.

With almost half of the twenty entries having possible alternative targets, the biggest dangers to the first three in the betting could come from Mr Gardner and Robinson Collonges.

The former was an excellent third behind Medermit in Sandown's Scilly Isles Novices' Chase, despite stumbling badly at the second-last, and is likely to make a bold bid from the front, whereas the latter was staying on well in the Vote A.P. Gold Cup won by Poquelin, before making a bad mistake three from home.

Robinson Collonges has always looked a horse with a bright future and it is significant that the powerful Paul Nicholls stable will only have the one runner in the contest, and therefore the 10/1 available with Betfred looks the best value in the race.
