Pandorama Major Cheltenham Gold Cup Player If Ground Comes Up Soft.

In the event of plenty of give in the ground for the Cheltenham Gold Cup, trainer Noel Meade believes the 8 year-old is capable of holding his own against the likes of Imperial Commander and co. on Friday 18th March.

Beaten only once over fences, when badly hampered early on, and eventually pulled up in Newbury's Hennessy Gold Cup, the gelding is possibly the least exposed runner in the race, and one with masses of potential to boot.

Meade's biggest worry, however, regarding the son of Flemensfirth, is his lack of fencing experience, explaining on At The Races: " I don't think the lack of a run is going to be a problem, other than the fact it would have been more experience.

" He is very inexperienced. He's won his four races and also had the trip over for the Hennessy where he was pulled-up after a mile so that's the one worry I have, especially round Cheltenham.

" If we get good to soft ground that will be ok but what we don't want is the sun to come out with a drying wind because it can dry quickly there. I think it should be fine, but there's nothing we can do about it.

" We schooled him on Wednesday. He jumped five fences three times and was really good. I'm really happy with where he is at the moment."

When there is plenty of cut in the ground Pandorama proved he is an outstanding staying chaser, with his comprehensive Lexus victory one of the best pieces of form on offer this season, a view that was franked when beaten faller Kempes went on to record an easy win in Leopardstown's Hennessy Gold Gup.

It could well pay to keep a close eye on the weather forecast for the next week or so as, if the word soft is in the going description a week come Friday, Pandorama's current odds of 14/1 are likely to be at least halved.
