The Wetherby's Cheltenham Betting Guide Novices' Chase at Huntingdon on Thursday will see the chasing debut of the talented two-mile hurdler Starluck, ahead of a possible tilt at Cheltenham's Irish Independent Arkle Chase, next month.

The Alan Fleming trained six-year-old was last seen in the William Christmas Hurdle at Kempton, when a well beaten third behind reigning Champion Hurdler Binocular..

Prior to that effort, the son of Key of Luck had finished a highly creditable second behind the unbeaten Peddlers Cross in the re-arranged Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newbury, a run which appeared to herald another possible crack at the Festival's two-mile championship showpiece on March 15th.

Even though the grey gelding has yet to jump a fence in public, connections are keen to begin a chasing career, and have already aquired the services of champion jockey Tony McCoy for the Irish Independent Arkle Chase at the Festival.

Available at odds of 40/1 just a short time ago, the significant jockey booking has seen those odds quickly disappear, with Arkle quotes now no bigger than 16/1, and even that price could contract further with a bold showing on Thursday, as Medermit, who is currently disputing favouritism at 9/2 was two places behind Starluck in last seasons' Champion Hurdle.

Starluck fits the profile of a potential Arkle winner, in that he is a top class hurdler who just lacks the ability to trouble those at the very top.

Current odds of 16/1 still seem very generous about a horse who could well be less than half that price on the first day of the Festival in three weeks time.
