Saturday's Totesport Trophy at Newbury may only be a handicap ( a valuable one at that ) but it has proved a significant Champion Hurdle trial over the years.

First run at Aintree in 1963, the great triple Champion Hurdle winner Persian War won both races in 1968, a feat that was not matched until Make a Stand completed the double in 1997.

1994 was a remarkable race in that the three principles, Large Action, Oh So Risky and Flakey Dove went on to fill the first three places in that years' Champion Hurdle, but with the mare Flakey Dove coming out on top this time.

Runaway 2003 Champion Hurdle winner Rooster Booster only just failed to hold Geos before finding only Hardy Eustace too good in the 2004 championship event.

While the 2011 Totesport Trophy is unlikely to play a major role in the outcome of this seasons' Champion Hurdle, a number of lively outsiders are out to enhance their championship claims.

Current 7/1 joint favourites, Solix and Salden Licht can be backed at 80/1 and 100/1 respectively for the ' big one ' next month, while 8/1 chance Walkon is a stand-out 40/1 with Stan James to fulfil the potential shown when runner-up in the 2009 Triumph Hurdle.

Another horse who could yet make an impact against the likes of Binocular and Hurricane Fly is last years winner Get Me Out Of Here, a 10/1 shot with Coral for Saturday's contest but available at 50/1 for the Champion Hurdle.

The gelding has disappointed in two races this season but if able to capture last seasons form, including a close second to Menorah in the Supreme Novices', a repeat of last years' victory is a distinct possibility.
