Medermit Advertises Arkle Claims

Tagged under: 2.05 Arkle Challenge Trophy Steeple Chase 2m

Last years Champion Hurdle seventh Medermit fulfilled his potential over the bigger obstacles with a decisive victory in Sandown's totepool Challengers Novices' Chase over an extended two mile four furlong, better known as the Scilly Isles Novices' Chase.

The seven-year-old blotted his copybook somewhat when refusing on his second start over fences at Huntingdon last November, but there was no signs of temperament as the son of Medaaly always looked in control against one of the best field of novices assembles this season.

The 5/2 favourite only had half a length to spare over the strong finishing Captain Chris passing the post, but the impression created was that there was plenty more left in the tank, if required.

While the Arkle would seem the logical target at the festival, trainer Alan King was still inclined to sit on the fence, saying: " Choc ( Thornton ) said he got there too soon and he just idled. You've got to be able to get the trip for the Arkle and this was the ideal preparation, but I'm not committing him to anything at the moment."

Medermit is now a clear third favourite for the Arkle at a general 7/1, behind long time market leaders Finians Rainbow and Ghizao, but bookmakers are also quoting the horse for the four furlong longer Jewson Novices' Chase, with 8/1 the best price available.

Which ever race connections decide to go for, the grey looks certain to be a force to be reckoned with at the festival, providing that his one slip-up at Huntingdon proves to be an inexplicable blip in an otherwise blemish free career.
