Big World Hurdle Challenge From Grand Cru

Tagged under: 3.20 Ladbrokes World Hurdle 3m (Grade1)

The World Hurdle at the 2011 Cheltenham Festival has taken on a different complexion folowing the superb 10 length victory of the David Pipe trained Grand Cru yesterday .

Stepping up to Grade 2 class for the first time in the Cleeve Hurdle on Festival Trials Day at Cheltenham, Grand Cru was held up in last position by jockey Tom Scudamore before moving into a more prominent position on the second circuit and the horse was so full of running that it eased into the lead going down the hill still on the bridle before shooting clear in the straight . This was a very impressive victory for the former handicapper and connections were enthusiastic about taking on the odds on Big Bucks in the Ladbrokes World Hurdle at this year's Festival .

Trainer David Pipe said "I wouldn't swap our fellow for anything else - even Big Buck's" whilst owner Roger Stanley commented ""I think we can give Big Buck's something to worry about but it would be no shame to finish second to him. I'm looking forward to going chasing with him next season."

The Paul Nicholl's trained Big Bucks has won the World Hurdle (formerly the Stayers Hurdle) at the Cheltenham Festival for the past 2 years and has won his last 10 races over hurdles .

Currently Big Bucks is the only odds on favourite at this years Festival but bookmakers were sufficiently impressed with the performance of Grand Cru to reduce his odds to best of 3/1 with Bet365 and to push out Big Bucks to a top price of 5/6 with Stan James .

The race is certainly hotting up and the Willie Mullins trained Mourad is also being lined up for a tilt at the World Hurdle after a smooth victory in the Galmoy Hurdle at Gowran Park on Friday .

The World Hurdle is ran on the Thursday of the Cheltenham Festival and is one of the most prestigious races of the week . Ladbrokes are currently the only bookmaker offering non runner no bet on the four Championship races at the Festival of which the World Hurdle is one
