The Neil Mulholland trained Midnight Chase entered the Gold Cup picture today, after recording his fourth course victory at Cheltenham.

Initially put in at 33/1 for the championship event next March after his win in the Majordomo Hospitality Handicap Chase, bookmakers, on reflection, cut the gelding again, with 25/1 the best price now available about the 8 year-old.

Always up with the pace, a mistake at the second-last handed a decisive advantage to the lightly weighted Presenting Forever, who appeared to have the race in safe keeping approaching the last.

Edging to the right on the run to the line the Howard Johnson trained grey allowed the 11/4 favourite to gamely battle back for a hard fought victory.

Although 12/1 market leader with the sponsors for the William Hill Trophy at the Festival, Mulholland has a more ambitious plan, saying: " He'll have a break now and be entered for the Gold Cup, with possibly one more run before, maybe in February.

" He only does what he has to do and he has a little fan club here now as he keeps coming back."

While Midnight Chase may lack the profile of the Kauto Stars' and Denmans' of the Gold Cup scene, what he lacks in class he certainly makes up for in courage, and although it is difficult to envisage the son of Midnight Legend being the best staying chaser in the land, there is a certain similarity between the horse and Cyril Griffith's 1990 Gold Cup winner Nortons Coin.

If, like Desert Orchid, the ' big guns ' fail to show their best next March the consistent Midnight Chase may be the one to take full advantage, should connections be brave enough to go that route.
