Cheltenham Clerk of the Course Simon Claisse is hoping that a brief thaw in the freezing conditions this weekend will allow sufficient time to allow the course to be completely covered for next Saturday's International meeting before temperatures drop again next week.

Claisse said yesterday that : "We are doing everything we can at Cheltenham to try and stage The International and will keep everyone updated as appropriate over the next few days." However he added ominously :"The forecast for next week is for more cold nights. Temperatures are predicted to get down to -4 or -5C most nights."

The International meeting, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, is one of the most significant meetings at Cheltenham outside the Festival in March. The Stan James International Hurdle and the newly named "Vote AP Gold Cup" are the main attractions on the Saturday card as well as the Tingle Creek Chase which has been re-scheduled for Cheltenham next weekend following the abandonmment of Sandown's card today .

Claisse reckons it will take 60 people at least three hours to cover the track and the parade ring etc on Sunday morning but everyone in the racing and betting industry will be hoping that it is worth the effort .
