Cheltenham Looking For Sponsor For International Meeting

The International Meeting takes place this year on December 10th and 11th and Andy Clifton the racecourse Communications Manager has admitted that they are desperately looking for a sponsor for the event.

Boylesports have sponsored the meeting for the last 4 years and have helped to raise the profile of the event particuarly the feature Boylesports Gold Cup which was won in 2010 by the Paul Nicholl’s trained Poquelin .

However Boylesports are suffering like all Irish Bookmakers from the collapse of the Tiger economy particuarly in the retail estate and the £315 000 plus cost of sponsoring the International meeting is too high in current economic times . Boylesports have recently ended their three year main sponsor deal with Premier League Club Sunderland and also withdrew from their sponsorship of the Irish 1000 & 2000 Guineas .

The Cheltenham International Meeting is less than six months away and Andy Clifton is realistic in his assesment of the chances of securing a sponsor for the whole meeting commenting “ nobody is going to pretend it is easy at the moment “

Whilst racing continues to request more money from Bookmakers via the levy it is facing a battle on many fronts to maintain it’s revenue at anywhere near the levels it experienced earlier in the decade . Stan James a leading independent bookmaker recently ended it’s sponsorship of the Guineas at Newmarket .The racing authorities need to improve their product to get more customers and more revenue and not simply rely on asking for more money from bookmakers every year.
